Strategies and intuition in working with historical references

Josefine Reisch revisits and reinterprets existing, sometimes artistic, objects. The resulting combinations of scenes and characters resemble a musical medley in their composition. This complexity of motifs also makes a multitude of interpretations and readings of the past the subject of her work. The ability of painting to be a simultaneity of different narratives is what Josefine uses to create a rupture in the interpretation of popular motifs. Her paintings resist an obvious readability and encourage us to question the contemporary dynamics of historical values.

Josefine Reisch lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2013 and completed her MFA Fine Arts at Goldsmiths University of London in 2017. She is currently a participant in the BPA //Berlin programme for artists.
