Liturgical Organ Playing / Improvisation

© Hochschule für Künste Bremen – Anja Segermann

Liturgical Organ Playing/Improvisation opens up a wide range of different opportunities to play artistic and sophisticated music in smaller and larger forms in various styles. Music theory and compositional aspects of respective musical eras go hand in hand with clearly defined, easily implementable methodological steps in order to perceive improvisation as liberating, creative and easy to learn. Historical sources and methodologies from the 17th and 18th centuries are considered as well as more recent ones, with counterpoint and basso continuo also serving as a basis for improvisation in early music. The study of organ literature plays an important role and, in connection with the rich North German organ landscape, is a diverse source of inspiration and ideas.
