- Einführung: Decolonize Gesellschaft – Afrodiasporische Perspektivenauf Geschichte, Gegenwart und Zukunft Introduction: Decolonize Society – Afrodiasporic Perspectives on History, Present, and Future Understanding the impact of colonial legacies and their ongoing colonial continuities is crucial in shaping contemporary society. While the cultural landscape increasingly engages with this discourse, it is equally important for the media to confront these issues. This seminar explores how colonial continuities continue to shape society and perceptions of design and examines the role of Afrodiasporic perspectives in decolonizing knowledge and identity. It brings together postcolonial theory, Afrofuturism, and Black liberation movements to ask: How can we rethink and reshape society? Afrofuturism is more than an aesthetic movement—it is a philosophical and political approach that envisions the future through African and Afrodiasporic perspectives. This seminar invites participants to explore alternative societal models based on Afrodiasporic knowledge systems. It investigates how Afrofuturist narratives offer alternative historiographies and future visions, challenging Eurocentric perspectives and colonial continuities. Are Eurocentric styles, aesthetics, and perspectives still dominant? Reflections on Power Structures: • What are colonial continuities in design? • How have decolonial and postcolonial approaches been perceived and implemented in practice? • What role do erasure and distortion of Black history play in colonial structures? • How do colonial structures continue to shape society today? Throughout the summer semester, we will critically engage with these core questions by examining selected platforms, including Slow Factory and Futuress. We will first develop a theoretical understanding of post- and decolonial approaches through a selection of key texts. This seminar takes an interdisciplinary perspective, considering all disciplines involved on both individual and institutional levels. The lecturer will Beatrace Oola contribute diverse insights from their own projects, enriching the critical discussion. Seminar Objectives: Through text analysis, visual material, videos, reflections, and discussions on various projects, this seminar aims to foster a critical understanding of what it means to disrupt colonial thought and behavioral patterns—including within one’s own work.
