The aim of the course is to reveal the essence of practice-oriented type design for experienced typographers. Understanding type as a system will sensitise you to the "DNA" of typography. In this course, you will learn how to fine-tune your own typographic ideas using homemade tools and how to effectively bring them to bear. We offer you a framework for developing your own text fonts through historical research and synthesis. As a final presentation, you will be challenged to creatively implement the font in a chosen type pattern format – and in doing so, to put the type pattern format itself to the test.

Das Ziel des Kurses ist, die Essenz der praxisorientierten Schriftgestaltung für bereits erfahrene Typograf_innen offenzulegen. Wer die Schrift als System begreift, wird für das “DNA” der Typografie sensibilisiert. Somit werdet ihr im Kurs lernen, eigene typografische Ideen mittels selbst gemachter Werkzeuge fein zu justieren und effektiv zur Geltung zu bringen. Wir bieten euch einen Rahmen an, eigene Textschriften mittels historischer Recherche und Synthese zu entwickeln. Als Endpräsentation werdet ihr herausgefordert, die Schriftart kreativ in einem gewählten Schriftmusterformat umzusetzen – und dabei das Schriftmusterformat selbst auf die Probe zu stellen.
