HfK Jazzclub: Vocal Combo
The jazz department at the HfK Bremen gained a new combo last winter term. The Vocal Combo, led by Charlène Thomas, sings for seven voices and is accompanied by the rhythm section. The musicians show how vocal and instrumental music can be fused together with an impressive love of experimentation. They apply fresh concepts such as vocal painting, which originated in Denmark, in which hand signals determine the music. This results in spontaneous grooves and surprising harmonies that vary in style, tempo and dynamics.
In addition to creative improvisation, the ensemble moves stylistically in the modern jazz of the last ten years and presents songs by a cappella groups such as New York Voices or Vox Arsana. Songs by young composers such as Jacob Collier and säje are also part of the combo's repertoire.
