International WinterAcademy of Early Music Bremen & Historic Brass Studio
The widespread extension of the Roman Empire paved the multiple routes branching out from Rome to all of Europe and vice versa. The subsequent presence of the seat of Christianity made the magnetism of this “Eternal City” irresistible: an unavoidable stop for pilgrims, artists from all fields, men of letters, politicians, and tourists. Each brought with them their own music and took with them that of the Urbe. Music and celebrations began in the streets, continued in the aristocratic halls, and culminated in the highly elitist papal chapel. Composers such as Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Gregorio Allegri, Emilio de’ Cavalieri, Francesco Foggia, Luca Marenzio, Giacomo Carissimi, and Arcangelo Corelli were central figures in this vibrant musical landscape, shaping the history of music in Rome.
The city’s influence was so profound that it attracted many international composers, such as Georg Muffat, Jacques-Martin Hotteterre, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Georg Friedrich Händel, and probably Johann Joseph Fux, who traveled to Rome to immerse themselves in its rich musical tradition. Indeed, all paths in the study of counterpoint seemed to lead to Rome!
