THE C.A.T.E. LUNCH TALK SERIES No.13 / Andrea Karch and Philipp Schueller

University of the Arts Bremen

by Tania Prill & Andrea Rauschenbusch
Seg. 4 / EG

Schapeshifters

Andrea Karch & Philipp Schueller got to know each other during their research residencies at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, where they were not only studio neighbours & flatmates, but also cultivated a deep friendship and collaborative spirit. During their residencies Andrea began to impersonate far-right rhetorics while Philipp transformed into his spirit animal – the shrimp. Where Andrea resorted to the mantra of playing the accordion in her video performance In de Duysent Vrees, Philipp became an oracle to his audience, in his performance Procustianacean. What sounds complicated is complicated (but fun!) – Shapeshifting between disciplines, identities and species can be challenging. In our upcoming lunch talk we will delve deeper into our metamorphoses, explore the challenges we faced and what followed our residencies. Shapeshifters often support each other by leveraging their unique abilities, sharing resources and offering emotional support. We’d like to share some of that with you, too.

Andrea Felizitas Karch is a research-based artist and interdisciplinary designer. She investigates radicalisms in media and network culture. Her research manifests in writing, performance, video work and collaboration. During her Bachelor’s at HfK Bremen, Andrea worked on an interview project in Cairo which marked the beginning of her investigation of network cultures and their political potential. At the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, she produced her video work Radical Youth, an exploration of online radicalization tactics and platform capitalism. Andrea has been an artist in residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht from 2022-23, where she produced her most recent video work In de Duysent Vrees, a two-channel video work examining the dissolution of the left-right dichotomy on the example of the identitarian movement in Germany and Europe. Andrea works for the design studio Basics09 in Berlin.

Philipp Schueller is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and educator. He holds a Master’s degree in Fashion from the Royal College of Art in London and a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. In 2022, he completed his post-academic research at the Jan van Eyck Academy, aiming to advance his practice as a “fashion biologist.” Philipp's work transcends traditional fashion, venturing into speculative future-scapes through object and performance-based practices. His creations reflect a deep interest in interspecies relationships and the often-unrecognized symbiotic bonds between humans and nature. As an educator, Philipp thrives on the creative exchange with students, sharing his extensive and diverse experience— from traditional fashion design to visual artistry that reinterprets fashion as a medium.

The lecture will be held in German and/or English.
