Virtual co-presence – theatre practice in the digital realm

Online
Vergangene Veranstaltung

The pillars of the performing arts are space, co-presence and liveness. Can theatre also take place in virtual spaces (VR, web, social media,...) and with virtual co-presence, i.e. when people come together without physically sharing a space? The digital performance collective CyberRäuber has been researching this artistically since 2016 and will present their theatre practice: what works, what doesn't and what's next?

About the artists:
Marcel Karnapke and Björn Lengers came together in 2016 because of their shared fascination for the possibilities of virtual reality (VR) in theatre. After the first prototype ‘Die CyberRäuber’ based on Schiller, the attempt to make classical theatre experienceable in VR, they subsequently attracted attention with projects that transferred theatre to digital worlds or brought digital worlds onto the stages. Over time, works in spoken theatre, children's and youth theatre, dance and music theatre, for educational institutions and exhibition spaces have been created; works with very different technological bases: VR, augmented reality, mixed reality, web projects, 360° film, mobile apps, festival platforms and, most recently, with an ever-increasing focus on artificial intelligence. They themselves describe this as digital performing arts.
