Moving Art on Two Wheels
HfK Art in Hanoi, VietnamIn December 2024, the streets of Hanoi became the stage for an extraordinary art project by the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK). As part of the “Month of Arts Practice” (MAP) 2024, motorcycles from the Vietnamese logistics company GHTK (GIAO HÀNG TIẾT KIỆM) roamed the city adorned with posters designed by HfK artists. Under the theme of "Movement", the artists showcased their diverse interpretations of the concept.
MAP 2024 is organised by Heritage Art Space in close cooperation with the HfK Bremen. The research project is part of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and FONA (Research for Sustainability) funding line “Pathways to Transformative Sustainability at Universites“.
The posters, designed in Bremen and shipped to Vietnam, were attached to motorcycles that traversed Hanoi's alleys, squares, and hidden corners from December 14 - 20. The interplay of posters, vehicle movement, urban landscapes, and public reactions creates a multi-layered narrative, shaping the unique artistic vision of this project. Participating artists included Felix Dreesen, Florian Witt, Jeroen Jacobs, Kayle Brandon, Siegfried Bank, Soobeen Woo, and Alexander Noah, each contributing their unique artistic signature. The working group was led by Prof. Ingo Vetter.
One of the goals of this unconventional exhibition was to capture the movement of the posters through Hanoi's vibrant streetscape in photographs and videos. This documentation will be featured in the final MAP exhibition, titled “Arrival?”, to be held in Berlin and Hanoi in 2025.
The collaboration with Heritage Art Space brings fresh perspectives to the concept of movement, encompassing not just physical motion but also the mobility of thoughts, ideas, and artworks. MAP 2024 creates a global dialogue, showing how art can transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.
A special highlight of the project is its connection to the experimental works of MAP’s inaugural year, building on these with new approaches. From photographic works and symbolic materials to conceptual explorations, HfK Bremen artists present movement in all its facets.
