The University of the Arts (HfK) Bremen is planning to appoint the internationally renowned musician Sara Kim as Professor of Viola and Chamber Music, effective April 1st, 2025. With her impressive international career and her dedication to teaching, she brings a wealth of expertise to the establishment of a new viola and chamber music class at HfK. Applications for the summer semester 2025 remain open until December 8th, 2024.

Born in 1988 in Daejeon, South Korea, Sara Kim received her musical training at the Gnessin Special School in Moscow and the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, where she transitioned from violin to viola. She later graduated with top honors from the Berlin University of the Arts' instrumental soloist programme. Her artistic journey was further enriched by studies with the Artemis Quartet in their chamber music programme and a masterclass at the University of Music and Theatre Munich.

Sara Kim has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at prestigious festivals, including the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. She has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, the Braunschweig State Orchestra, and the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra. A career highlight was her 2012 performance at Bellevue Palace for German President Joachim Gauck, by invitation of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben (English: German Foundation for Musical Life).

Her extensive orchestral background includes serving as principal viola with the Braunschweig State Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, along with guest appearances with ensembles like the Deutsche Oper Berlin and MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig. In addition to her performance career, Sara Kim has honed her teaching skills as a lecturer at the music universities in Berlin, Munich, and Leipzig.

With Sara Kim, HfK Bremen will gain a top-class musician and educator who is appreciated worldwide for her energetic and colourful interpretations. Following her appointment, Sara Kim will aim to further develop the university's viola class. Interested students are encouraged to apply for the summer semester 2025 before the December 8th, 2024 deadline.
