Historical Bassoon

The study of the historical bassoon at the University of the Arts Bremen focuses on thoroughly understanding the bassoon repertoire from its origins to the 19th century. Starting with the dulcian is recommended, as it efficiently teaches basic techniques that can be applied to later instruments. Lessons cover playing techniques, improvisation, and reed making, while also offering deep insights into performance practices and historical contexts.

The programme aims to develop flexibility, adaptability, and independence, as well as the skills needed to prepare concert programs and produce video and audio recordings. Alongside technical and stylistic training, students explore the unique sounds and articulation possibilities of each instrument. Additionally, contemporary repertoire is developed in collaboration with the composition department, allowing students to become familiar with and harness the expressive potential of the baroque bassoon.
