Library Art and Design

The library in Speicher XI is a particularly important place at the University of the Arts Bremen. From art history and typography to sculpture and cultural history, the publicly accessible art library provides visitors with an extensive range of specialist literature and E-media. Here, university members and external visitors can browse through the numerous titles and volumes in the library collection, delve into research and acquire theoretical knowledge in the field of art and design and more. 

The art and design sub-library, which is open to the public, primarily provides staff and students of the HfK's Faculty of Art and Design with specialist literature. Dating back to the collections of the Gewerbemuseum and the Kunstgewerbeschule Bremen at the beginning of the 20th century, the library's holdings today include around 65,000 books, E-media, art, fashion and design magazines and access to various specialist databases. The collection focuses on art history, art theory, aesthetics, artistic science, sculpture, painting, graphic arts, photography, film and video art, digital media, media history, visual communication, graphic design, typography, product design, performance, fashion history and design, (temporary) architecture. cultural history and more.

As part of the State and University Library Bremen, the holdings of the Art Faculty Library can be researched in the joint library catalogue. Book recommendations for new acquisitions are accepted on site or via the purchase suggestion form. 18 individual workstations and, to a limited extent, group workstations are available in addition to copying facilities and a free scanner. 

The library rooms are barrier-free.

During the summer and the lecture-free period, the Art Library will have different opening and closing times from 15 July, please note this when returning items, etc.

15 July – 31 July 2024: Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
1 August – 30 August 2024: closed
2 September – 16 September 2024: Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

New trial opening hours during the semester:
Monday–Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The trial opening hours will initially apply until the end of the 2024/25 winter semester.
