Distaff Studio and David Nagel from N-A-G-E-L give an insight into their logbook. With stopovers, unplanned loops, and course corrections, they share the stages of their creative journey — and everything they’ve learned along the way.
David Nagel has lived and worked in Berlin since 2009. After graduating in Integrated Design at the University of the Arts Bremen, he has worked for several design studios as freelancer and as permanent team member of the agencies Stan Hema and Heimann+Schwantes for some years. In 2015 he founded his own studio N-A-G-E-L, which conceives and creates visual identities with the idea of clarity and versatility.
Distaff Studio was founded in 2022 by Sarah Fricke and Lea Sievertsen—after 12 years of friendship, studying together, first jobs, and countless unintentional matching outfits.
Lea studied at Burg Halle, HAW Hamburg, and HFBK Hamburg. She was a resident of the Young Design Fund at MK&G Hamburg and co-founder of the feminist initiative notamuse. Sarah studied at Burg Halle and HFK Bremen. In 2017, she traveled through the USA and Russia with the H. A. Bockmeyer travel scholarship, where she explored the aesthetics of power in her project, analyzing the visual staging strategies of autocratic (or autocratically inclined) leaders, exemplified by Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
With Distaff Studio, we combine our love for design with our interest in research- and concept-driven work. In our proactive approach, we see design as a collaborative process of critical reflection, translation, and interpretation of content to communicate it effectively. Our projects are not only commissioned but emerge in open dialogue—with the goal of creating thoughtful and sustainable solutions.
