Institute for Early Music and performance practice
For almost 40 years, Bremen has been an internationally recognized center for Early Music. Founded in 1986, the Bremen Academy of Early Music was the first institute in Germany to offer a complete study program in historically informed performance practice. The Academy became part of the Bremen University of the Arts in 1994. In 2024, Prof. Mechthild Karkow and Prof. Dr. Christoph Prendl founded the Institute for Early Music and performance practice. The institute focuses on related questions in teaching, research, and performance. Students regularly present their work in concerts in Bremen and abroad. Graduates are active worldwide as soloists and in specialized ensembles.
The International Winter Academy of Early Music Bremen, held annually in February, attracts over 100 participants from many different countries.
